Is there a negative trade-off between morphological complexity and word-order freedom across languages? A UD-based test

Statement

The compensation ('equi-complexity') hypothesis holds that languages with richer word-internal (morphological) structure tend to have freer, less-information-bearing word order, so the two dimensions trade off. QUESTION: over Universal Dependencies (UD), compute per language (i) a morphological-complexity measure -- e.g. mean inflectional entropy per lemma, forms-per-lemma, or a word-entropy/MDL measure over word forms -- and (ii) a word-order-freedom measure -- e.g. the entropy of head-direction (or of the relative order of a dependent given its dependency relation), averaged over relations. Is (i) negatively correlated with (ii) across languages, and does the correlation survive controls for genealogical and areal non-independence?

Acceptance. FULLY RESOLVES: for $\geq 30$ UD languages, compute an explicitly-defined morphological-complexity measure and an explicitly-defined word-order-freedom measure, report their partial correlation under genealogical + areal control (mixed model or stratified permutation) with sign, effect size, and significance, plus a sensitivity analysis over at least two alternative measures of each axis; ship a reproducible CoNLL-U pipeline. PARTIAL: the uncontrolled correlation over the full UD sample, or a replication of the Koplenig et al. (2017) direction using UD-derived measures on $\geq 10$ languages.

Background

The equi-complexity hypothesis was challenged by McWhorter (2001) and quantified by Sinnemaki and others. Koplenig, Meyer, Wolfer & Muller (2017, 'The statistical trade-off between word order and word structure -- large-scale evidence for the principle of least effort', PLoS ONE 12(3):e0173614) found a negative correlation between word-order rigidity and word-structure information across many languages using parallel corpora. Futrell, Mahowald & Gibson (2015, 'Quantifying word order freedom in dependency corpora', Proc. Depling) defined dependency-based word-order-freedom measures. A reproducible dependency-based replication over UD, with explicit measures and phylogenetic/areal controls, is open.
